In cooperation with our solution partner in Japan, Ispirer executed a short-term migration project for a subsidiary of a grand, reputed Tokyo-based telecommunications company. The subsidiary is one of the largest system integrators in the world.
Challenge
Our client wanted to migrate its database from Oracle to PostgreSQL, as well as part of Java application with JDBC API from Oracle to PostgreSQL, and part of Oracle Pro*C C++ application to the PostgreSQL ECPG C++ application. The scope of this migration was quite extensive and included conversion of database scripts, indexes, views, sequences, packages, functions, and application files – about 100 thousand lines of code overall. The main challenge of this project was the short timeline of about one month.
Solution
Ispirer provided the client with full-cycle conversion services with the SQLWays migration tool. A well-prepared team was engaged, which included database and application migration specialists, Java and C++ consultants, and SQLWays tool developers. A project manager from Ispirer and a quality assurance specialist from our solution partner were assigned as well.
Due to the time restrictions defined by the client, the work was divided into three streams – database conversion, application conversion, and dynamic SQL conversion. The migration project was a real workout for Ispirer’s technical specialists and entailed full commitment to the project as well as immediate settlement of problematic issues.
Results & Advantages
The database migration was seamless as the results obtained with the help of SQLWays were almost impeccable and did not require many corrections from database migration specialists. The most difficult task, however, was the migration of dynamic SQL which always requires a higher degree of effort due to the irregularity and complexity of the dynamic SQL code. In spite of the complexity, the task was executed successfully with the help of SQLWays, and several customizations of the tool were carried out by the Ispirer team. As a result, all migration tasks were resolved and the client got ready-to-implement conversion results on time, putting to rest the doubts raised by the client regarding the feasibility of the project at the beginning.
